Julie Payne has been working with clay since 1990 after taking a ceramics course at State University of New York at Plattsburgh.  She came to North Carolina in 1993 and began working in Seagrove NC as a production potter.

In 1994 Julie moved to Asheville NC and continued to work with clay.  In 1997, Julie opened her own retail store in downtown Asheville called Throwing Clay Pottery.  Throwing Clay drew many pottery enthusiasts students and collectors alike.  Julie put a wheel in the window so people could watch her create her ware. Julie took on several apprentices at this time, some who continued on to become professional potters.

In 2003, Julie moved to Mooresville NC.  She continued to throw and supply shops and galleries across NC with her ware. Her mugs with logos and various stamps are one of her most popular items.  Julie states "Mugs are one of my favorite things to make, they're so personal, and a part of every day for people.  When I pull the handles I try to create one that comfortably rests in your hand."

"My newest addition is porcelain clay pendants.  For me carving has always been a passion.  I love how an image pressed into carved clay resembles a wood cut.  Also the way the glaze empathizes the carving to give it more depth.  Currently I am working to have 100 designs by May.  I get so excited to open my kiln full of new pendants. I want to create images that reside with people.  Images that are special to you.  In this day, it is key to remember what is important to us."

If you have an idea you would like to see on a pendant please email me.  Julie@jewelpottery.com
